Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone

By Brene Brown, PhD, LMSW

Introduction

Braving the Wilderness…by Brene Brown, PhD, LMSW is a self-help book that discusses the hardships that come along with standing firm in beliefs, even when it goes against what others believe. It serves as encouragement to be true to yourself when the journey is difficult because the reward is great. It is a thought-provoking read and extremely encouraging as it is full of the author’s personal experiences, research, and wisdom.

Summary

This book focuses on encouraging readers to be their true, authentic selves. It discusses the idea, which Brown supports with her research, that individuals have deeper, more meaningful relationships when there is courage to be vulnerable and true to self. Though it is difficult, as authenticity is often neglected in order to fit in, the reward is great as in deeper connection, increased compassion, and integrity.

What I Liked

The strengths of this book include:

  1. Brown supports her claims with years of research, personal experience, and wisdom from others.
  2. The book provides discussion pages at the end of the book to allow the reader to think more deeply about the content.
  3. There is discussion about why individuals act the way they do, such as defensiveness around a certain topic if there is a differing opinion. Brown backs all of her discussions with her years of research.

What Could Have Been Better

Though Brown backs much of her discussions with research, personal experiences, and some wisdom drawn from others (such as Maya Angelou!), the book could have been stronger if it provided a wider variety of experiences from other individuals.

Favorite Quote or Moment

On page 69 in the book, Brown discusses what causes fear and hate, as well as resent ment and bitterness. It was incredibly eye-opening. Here it is simplified:

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for support and encouragement to be true to yourself, I recommend this book.  I also recommend this book if you are looking to discover who you are. The wisdom and personal experiences in this read can help you begin exploring what “true belonging” means to you and what it would look like in your life.
