Practicing Mindfulness…by Matthew Sockolov is a self-help book that promotes mindfulness as a way to help mental health and overall well-being. This book was chosen due to it’s easily accessible nature. It is broken down into sections, so it is conducive to picking it up and finding what you need quickly. Due to the nature of the book and its layout, it is easy to think of it as a reference book.
Summary
This book focuses on providing readers with multiple, brief mindfulness exercises that can be used consistently and daily. It is broken down into three categories:
- Basic Mindfulness Exercises
- Everyday Mindfulness
- Mindful Moods
These categories allow the reader to find a quick, easy-to-read mindful exercise to help themselves or allow for mindful practices that can be incorporated into daily living as more of a lifestyle change.
What I Liked
The strengths of this book include:
- Author provides his personal story and how mindfulness helped shape his mental health, well-being, and way of life.
- The book provides numerous resources in the even the reader would like to further develop their mindfulness practice.
- The book is broken down into quick and easy sections for easy reference.
What Could Have Been Better
While I enjoy the layout of the book, I found some of the exercises more wordy than needed. I found it could likely be even more concise than it already is.
Favorite Quote or Moment
The author repeatedly calls out how much power the mind contains. It serves as a good reminder that we have control over our minds and do not have to succumb to its whims.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this is a fantastic read. It is recommended often in my practice due to the nature of the book and how it helps apply mindfulness to daily, mundane, and even small practices. The practices are easy to do and help improve mental health.
